The MBBHL rulebook is simple… there are no refs so we simply ask that people play clean and use common sense as much as possible. For instance, when the goalie freezes the ball and gives it to his defensemen to re-start the play, the opposing team should give the other team some space to play the ball. Same goes after a goal (team who got scored on takes the ball from their end).
Aside from using fair play, here are the other rules:
- There are 4 teams in the league. Each team will be playing 1 game per day. Each game will last 3 periods of 25 minutes. Teams will be allowed a 5-minute warm up and 3-minute breaks in between periods. After each game, it will be the Captain’s (or assistant-captain) job to let Phil know the score so we can write it down and keep proper standings. We will have playoffs at the end of September. The highest ranking team will be playing the lowest while the 2nd and 3rd place teams will square off. The winning teams will then meet up and play to win the Van Horne Cup. If two teams are tied at the end of the season, regular season series between the 2 tied teams will determine ranking.
- Balls: Each team should bring their own practice balls for warm up. League will hand out the official liquid-filled no bounce balls for the games. There is no netting around the fields so please make sure you retrieve the balls as they go out (not wait after the game). In other words, a new game ball is not automatically thrown into play once a ball goes out; play only resumes once the game ball has been retrieved (2 exceptions: if ball hasn't been found after a few minutes of searching or if there is 2-3 minutes left to a game and score is tight). These balls are a bit expensive so every ball you save is 2-3 more beers for the end of the year party; I think it’s worth taking 30 seconds during the game to go after one that went out!!!
- Face offs occur at the beginning of each period and after every goal. The team that scored the goal selects a player to drop the ball.
- When there is a play stoppage (goalie freezes the puck, ball goes over the board...), the player selected to put the ball back into ply must wait till both teams are set. If a team is making a line change, the opponent must give them sufficient time to do so. Fair lay Rules.
- Each team should bring a clock so all can keep track of time. However, only one team per week will be in charge of whistling the beginning and the end of games. Again, we ask that the team in charge of the whistle show fair play.
- If a team is not ready to play (missing players or goalie is not ready) after warm up is done, the culprit team is given a one-goal penalty (when game starts, opposing team will be leading 1-0). Arrive on time and this should not be an issue!
- If, at the end of 3 periods, the game is tied, there will be a shootout (same rules as NHL). Team that loses will get a point.
- Again, PLAY CLEAN. We understand that everybody wants to win and want to drink from the cup, but let’s keep this league fun and limit the pushing and yelling and complaining. Please remember that we are lucky to be able to play hockey once a week with 60 other guys and girls instead of being at home.
